Day 65 - Unlimited Love
Scripture focus: The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. Isaiah 40:28
The intervention was planned and executed with great care. Large doses of grace and mercy were paired with hard but gently delivered words of truth. In spite of the pre-planning and prayerful approach to the event - the desired outcome was not achieved on that day. The intervened upon remained stubbornly resistant to treatment. The final consequences for this decision had to be named.
"Well, then I have to tell you, I'm done. I'm done cleaning up after you, lying for you and living with you. I can't take this anymore. I love you. But I'm tired beyond belief. I'm worn out. I don't understand your decision, and I am reluctant to make my decision too. You need to move out. I can't support you in any capacity any more - as long as you are not willing to get treatment for your disease."
This feels like failure. And if our only measuring stick for success is found in the world of things that you can see, taste, touch, smell and hear - we'd be right. But this isn't the only world where powerful stuff happens.
People who sincerely love us have limits; this is a fact of life - and is healthy. Mere mortals have limits and boundaries. These are not failings, shortcomings, selfish, or defective - these are often clues that the person is learning and in recovery from love sickness.
For the struggling, this sometimes feels like rejection. If you find yourself on the outside of a loved one's fence - take heart. God does not get tired or weary of us. He listens patiently. He waits persistently. He understands limitlessly. He gets us.
Passions, cravings, lusts, and longings may confound and confuse - but the everlasting God understands all. When we can't find our way of escape from temptation - and we hate the darkness - we can be busy about the business of reminding ourselves that our limited understanding doesn't mean we're lost. It means we're in need of a God who is and will.
