Scripture focus: It's common knowledge that "God goes against the willful proud; God gives grace to the willing humble." So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he'll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it's the only way you'll get on your feet. Don't bad-mouth each other, friends. It's God's Word, his Message, his Royal Rule, that takes a beating in that kind of talk. You're supposed to be honoring the Message, not writing graffiti all over it. God is in charge of deciding human destiny. Who do you think you are to meddle in the destiny of others? James 4:6-12, The Message
I have always assumed that spiritual renewal should feel good.
According to James, in order for God to work his will in us, we must surrender to a process. Here’s his strongly worded suggestion for renewal, reworded by me!
· Renewal requires humility, not humiliation. Humility says, “I’m teachable.” Humiliation says, “I’m so ashamed I’ll comply for awhile and hope this bad situation abates.”
· Renewal requires cooperation. God won’t force his will upon us.
· We cooperate when we yell a loud no to the devil and pay attention as we watch him scamper.
· We cooperate when we say a quiet yes to God and trust that he’ll show up soon.
· Renewal requires that we explore inner purification. Community, counseling, study, support, commitment and cooperation will help us in this area.
· We’ll have to quit waffling about our commitment. We’ll need to care more about surrendering to God than our natural inclinations. This will take practice. We’ll mess up often and predictably. A community of grace will help us as we learn.
· Renewal requires a bottom. It will hurt.
· Renewal is serious business, not all fun and games.
· Prayer and meditation, speaking and listening to God are all part of the process.
