Day 153 - Summer fun and spiritual pleasures
Scripture focus: Basically, all of us, whether insiders or outsiders, start out in identical conditions, which is to say that we all start out as sinners. Scripture leaves no doubt about it: There's nobody living right, not even one, nobody who knows the score, nobody alert for God. They've all taken the wrong turn; they've all wandered down blind alleys, no one's living right; I can't find a single one. This makes it clear, doesn't it, that whatever is written in these Scriptures is not what God says about others but to us to whom these Scriptures were addressed in the first place! Ahhh, a new month of devotionals! I love a fresh start. Perhaps we've all let our devotions slip as our mid-brains have found distractions with the early summer sunshine and promise of vacations and pool time. But before we set aside our devotions and begin the laborious process of relapsing into a godless state of desperation, pause to prepare.
This month we're going to focus on shame - the toxic kind. It might just be worth tuning in, even though it's tempting to check out. We're also going to focus on some other big feelings - like anger, fear, worry, depression, anxiety!
I know I'm looking forward to a few breaks this summer - but join me, won't you? Let's give ourselves both breaks and meaningful respites! Carve out some time for God this summer. I suspect that we'll all find ourselves better equipped, more mature, and definitely less shame-filled if we'll keep plugging at finding our way back to God - even when the sun is shining!
May this be a great summer of renewal in body, mind and spirit!
